iPhone 1st Generation Display Assembly Replacement

If the screen is damaged or malfunctioning, a replacement is necessary.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Step 1 image
Using a SIM card eject tool or a straightened paper clip, gently push into the aperture located adjacent to the headphone jack.
Using gentle, consistent pressure, depress the paper clip until the SIM card tray ejects.

Step 2

Step 2 image
Using your fingers, gently push the SIM card tray outward from the iPhone until it is fully ejected.

Step 3 | Antenna Cover

Step 3 image
To detach the antenna cover, depress the two upper tabs, pushing them inward against the black housing, and simultaneously disengage the two catches situated on its lower surface.

Step 4

Step 4 image
Carefully insert the metal spudger in the space separating the antenna cover from the dock connector, avoiding the connector's internal components.
Using a metal spudger, carefully separate the antenna cover from the silver front bezel by inserting the spudger into the space beside the dock connector and gently lifting upward, focusing on the areas near the two tabs to establish a slight separation.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using an iPod opening tool, gently separate the antenna cover from the front bezel by sliding the tool’s wedge-shaped end under the cover.
Carefully maneuver the tool along the edge and advance it upwards until it contacts the metal support.
Perform the identical steps again for the remaining connector side.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Apply firm, even pressure to both sides of the antenna cover, then slide it upward to disengage it from the iPhone; if resistance is encountered, confirm the cover is fully raised to release the retaining clips.

Step 7 | Case

Step 7 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the rear panel by unscrewing the three fasteners that hold it in place.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Opening the iPhone requires patience and care; allocate sufficient time for the repair process and remain calm if you encounter difficulty.
Using a dental pick, proceed to the subsequent step by inserting it into the precisely sized, square aperture.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Carefully detach the rear panel, beginning on the side containing the control buttons.
Using a dental pick, insert it fully into the square-shaped opening; it might require some maneuvering and considerable force to achieve complete insertion.

Step 10

Step 10 image
To detach the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, counterclockwise force directly outward, perpendicular to the display assembly’s surface; rapid movement is preferable to avoid bending the case.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Carefully slide a spudger between the rear panel and the iPhone casing, working along the top edge and the corners to release the adhesive securing the panel.

Step 12

Step 12 image
Using the same steps, perform the process on the opposite side of the iPhone; insert the dental pick fully into the rectangular opening, and be prepared to gently maneuver the tool and use considerable pressure to ensure complete insertion.

Step 13

Step 13 image
To detach the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, rotational force, turning it clockwise. Ensure the force is directed at a 90-degree angle to the display assembly's surface; a rapid movement is preferable to avoid deforming the case.
Because the headphone jack cable secures the rear panel to the iPhone, avoid completely detaching it at this stage.

Step 14

Step 14 image
Prior to detaching the headphone jack cable, ensure the device's power is completely deactivated.
Carefully detach the headphone jack cable connector from the logic board using a spudger.

Step 15 | Display Assembly

Step 15 image
Carefully lift the adhesive orange tape to release the white antenna cable from the iPhone's side.

Step 16

Step 16 image
Carefully detach the two antenna cables from the communications board using a spudger, noting that a small amount of adhesive secures these connections and may require extra effort during removal.

Step 17

Step 17 image
Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the three screws.
  • A logic board is affixed to the iPhone, close to the camera, by a Phillips #00 screw.
  • Secure the logic board using two Phillips #00 screws, positioning one screw at each corner.

Step 18

Step 18 image
Carefully detach the camera connector using a spudger.
Carefully extract the camera module from the iPhone, maintaining all original positioning.

Step 19

Step 19 image
Starting at the frame edge furthest from the battery terminals, carefully slide a spudger into the gap between the battery and the plastic frame, then gently lift upward to release the battery. The battery is secured with adhesive, so apply steady, gradual pressure to detach it.
To prevent damage, position the battery so it doesn't fully seat within its compartment, taking care to avoid stressing the battery wires—their soldered connections are fragile.

Step 20

Step 20 image
Using a spudger, gently lift the logic board a small amount from the side furthest from the battery connector; avoid excessive upward force as four connectors remain secured to the board's underside.

Step 21

Step 21 image
Carefully insert a spudger between the logic board and the device chassis, in the area previously occupied by the camera module; avoid excessive upward force at this stage to prevent damage to the four remaining connectors securing the logic board.

Step 22

Step 22 image
Carefully raise the logic board a small amount, then use a spudger to gently separate the display ribbon cable from its connector.
To release the speaker connector, advance the spudger toward the battery and the iPhone's center, once the initial connector is disengaged.

Step 23

Step 23 image
Carefully flip the logic board over and, utilizing a spudger, detach the touch sensor cable connector located on its underside.

Step 24

Step 24 image
Using a spudger, gently lift the black locking bar, rotating it until it's perpendicular to its original position; note that the image shows the bar already in this rotated state.

Step 25

Step 25 image
Carefully separate the battery and logic board assembly by sliding them horizontally, ensuring they move clear of the orange antenna and fully exit the iPhone's casing.

Step 26

Step 26 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the front bezel from the iPhone by unscrewing the three screws that hold it in place.

Step 27

Step 27 image
Turning the device perpendicular to its initial position, detach the two Phillips #00 screws securing the lower edge.

Step 28

Step 28 image
Turn the device until its side is oriented horizontally, then detach the three screws secured with a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

Step 29

Step 29 image
Turn the device until its top edge is accessible, then detach the two Phillips #00 screws securing that area.

Step 30

Step 30 image
Carefully detach the front bezel from the iPhone's main body.

Step 31

Step 31 image
Ensure the screen is connected securely, referencing the 12-pin connector's orientation as shown in Figure 3.2, and that the display cable is free from kinks or damage, as improper connection or damage can prevent image output.
Join the components together.
Ensure the component stays in place.
