iPhone 1st Generation Headphone Jack Replacement

If no sound is present, substitute a new headphone jack assembly.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Step 1 image
Using a SIM card eject tool or a straightened paper clip, gently push into the small aperture located adjacent to the headphone jack.
Using gentle, consistent pressure, depress the paper clip to eject the SIM card tray.

Step 2

Step 2 image
Using your fingers, gently eject the SIM card tray from the iPhone by sliding it outward.

Step 3 | Antenna Cover

Step 3 image
To detach the antenna cover, depress the two upper tabs, directing them inward against the black cover, and simultaneously disengage the two catches found on its lower surface.

Step 4

Step 4 image
Carefully insert the metal spudger in the space separating the antenna cover from the dock connector, avoiding direct contact with the connector.
Using a metal spudger, carefully separate the antenna cover from the front bezel by inserting the spudger into the space between the dock connector and the cover, and gently lifting upward in the vicinity of the two tabs, establishing a narrow separation.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using an iPod opening tool, gently separate the antenna cover from the front bezel by sliding the tool's wedge-shaped end under the cover.
Using the tool, maneuver it along the corner and advance it upwards until it contacts the metal backing.
Perform the identical steps again for the dock connector's opposite side.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Apply firm, even pressure while sliding the antenna cover upwards, disengaging it from the iPhone; if resistance is encountered, verify the cover is fully raised to release the retaining clips.

Step 7 | Headphone Jack

Step 7 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the rear panel by unscrewing the three fasteners that hold it in place.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Opening the iPhone requires patience and focus; allocate sufficient time and remain calm to successfully complete this delicate procedure.
Using a dental pick, proceed to the subsequent step by inserting it into the designated small, square aperture.
Using a heavy-duty spudger, carefully slide the pointed tip into the gap located between the gray metal bar and the rear panel, lifting the panel slightly to create enough space to subsequently insert the tip of the iPod opening tool into the seam that separates the front bezel from the rear panel.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Carefully detach the rear panel, beginning on the side containing the control buttons.
Insert the dental pick fully into the square-shaped opening, potentially requiring slight manipulation and firm pressure for complete insertion.

Step 10

Step 10 image
To release the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, counterclockwise force directly outward, perpendicular to the display assembly's surface; rapid movement is preferable to avoid bending the case.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8 screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of 4.5 in-lbs to prevent damage.
Carefully disengage the rear panel from the iPhone's casing around the corner and top edges using a spudger; avoid complete separation at this stage because the headphone jack cable still connects the panel to the device.

Step 12

Step 12 image
Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four mounting screws securing the fan assembly to the motor housing, ensuring each is snug but not over-tightened to prevent damage; observe the torque limit of 6 in-lbs per screw.
Using the same steps, proceed with the repair on the opposite side of the iPhone; insert the dental pick fully into the rectangular opening, which may require slight manipulation and considerable pressure to achieve complete insertion.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8mm screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of 4 in-lbs to prevent damage.
To detach the rear panel, use a dental pick and apply a swift, counterclockwise force directly outward, perpendicular to the display assembly's surface; rapid movement is recommended to prevent case distortion.
Because the headphone jack cable secures the rear panel to the iPhone, avoid complete separation at this stage.

Step 14

Step 14 image
Carefully align the 4mm hex key to the setscrew, ensuring it engages fully, then gradually tighten the setscrew to a torque of 1.5 Nm using the torque wrench.
Prior to detaching the headphone jack cable, ensure the device is powered down.
Employ a spudger to carefully separate the headphone jack cable connector from the logic board.

Step 15

Step 15 image
Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8 screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of 4.5 in-lbs to prevent damage.
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the on/off switch from the rear panel by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place.

Step 16

Step 16 image
Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the three screws.
Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen and remove the two screws that fasten the vibrator to the back panel.
A single Phillips #00 screw, notably larger in head size and length, fastens the headphone jack assembly to the rear panel.

Step 17

Step 17 image
Carefully elevate the metal screw plate, which secures the on/off switch, a small distance while disengaging it from the rear panel; the attached cable will then release the button.
Carefully detach the on/off switch ribbon cable, focusing your pull near the adhesive securing it to the rear panel.

Step 18

Step 18 image
To release the headphone jack, which sits slightly inset in the rear panel, gently slide it out of its surrounding structure and elevate it a small amount—no more than 1/4 inch (1/2 centimeter)—to disengage it from the panel.

Step 19

Step 19 image
Carefully elevate the headphone jack from its position at the tip, extracting the vibrator from the back of the device.

Step 20

Step 20 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the silent/ring switch from the rear panel by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place.
Carefully detach the metal plate featuring the screw openings, ensuring you retain it to reattach the new switch.

Step 21

Step 21 image
To access the screw, raise the silent/ring switch.

Step 22

Step 22 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the volume switch from the rear panel by unscrewing the three screws that hold it in place.

Step 23

Step 23 image
Carefully extract the headphone jack assembly from the rear panel.
