iPhone 3G Front Panel Replacement

Prior to commencing any repair work, disconnect the device completely from all electrical power.

  • To complete this task, you will need the following tools.Utilize a Phillips head screwdriver.

Consult the user manual to find model-specific information and extra safety guidelines.

Step 1 | Broken Glass

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 3
To avoid injury and contain shattered fragments while you work, secure any cracked display glass with tape.
Apply clear packing tape in successive layers across the iPhone screen, ensuring complete coverage of the display surface.
To prevent scattered fragments and maintain stability during the display separation process, this technique ensures the glass remains consolidated.
To safeguard your vision, always use safety glasses while working, as fragments of glass may detach.

Step 2 | Display

Step 2 image
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the two screws securing the dock connector.
To prevent confusion during reassembly, carefully sort the screws by length as they are removed, as variations in size exist.

Step 3

Step 3 image
For improved handling and safety, detach the metal handle from the suction cup, as gripping the base provides a more secure hold.
Exercise extreme caution during iPhone disassembly to prevent damage to the delicate display cables.
A black display assembly is sealed to the silver front bezel by a rubber gasket, and disassembling these components necessitates applying moderate pressure.
Carefully lift the bottom edge of the display assembly by applying gentle upward force with a suction cup positioned close to the Home button.
When the display assembly's surface prevents proper suction cup attachment due to damage, secure it with a robust adhesive tape, like duct tape.

Step 4

Step 4 image
Before completely separating the display assembly from the iPhone, be aware that multiple cables retain the connection.
Tilt the display assembly upwards, achieving roughly a 45-degree angle.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Using one hand to secure the display assembly, employ a spudger with your other hand to carefully detach the ribbon cable identified as "1."
To connect ribbon cable "1", align the block at its terminus—the plug—and insert it directly into the corresponding socket on the circuit board; no additional securing features are present.

Step 6

Step 6 image
Adjust the display assembly's orientation until it stands approximately perpendicular.
Removing the component provides improved clearance to facilitate disconnection of the remaining cables.
Carefully detach the ribbon cable identified with the label "2" using a spudger.

Step 7

Step 7 image

To release ribbon cable "3", which is secured by an FPC connector, rotate the locking mechanism—located on the opposite side of the cable insertion point—upward 90 degrees, then slide the cable free.
Employ a plastic spudger to gently disengage the locking mechanism.
Because the flexible printed circuit (FPC) locking latch is fragile and visually distinguished from the connector body—refer to the included image illustrating the open and closed FPC connector—handle it with care.
Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable from its connector, then detach the display assembly from the iPhone.
To correctly connect a ribbon cable to the flexible printed circuit (FPC) connector, the locking latch must be released; ensure this latch is open during cable attachment and detachment.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Using a Phillips head screwdriver, size #00, detach the display assembly by unscrewing the screw located at its corner.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Using a Phillips head screwdriver, size #00, detach the display assembly by unscrewing the two fasteners located on its right-hand side.

Step 10

Step 10 image
Carefully lift the display, and if a narrow strip of black tape is present on its perimeter, remove it with caution.
To prevent the adhesive from bonding to itself during the repair, position the tape on a surface treated with wax, such as a sheet of paper with a sticker backing.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Detach the component.Utilize three screws with a Phillips head, size #00.Access the component from the display assembly's left edge.

Step 12

Step 12 image
Using a metal spudger, carefully work it into the gap between the two metal rails on the display assembly’s underside. Rotate the spudger to detach the LCD from the glass with gentle lifting pressure.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Carefully detach the LCD from the glass assembly by gently moving the LCD panel outward, disengaging the ribbon cables from their connectors on the glass.

Step 14 | Front Panel

Step 14 image
Following LCD removal, the remaining components and assembly should appear as described.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Exercise caution with the heat gun during the following procedures; maintain a minimal heat setting to prevent damage to the touchscreen plastics and Home button. Because the metal frame efficiently transfers heat, prevent contact with these heated regions.
Exercise extreme caution and gentleness when extracting glass pieces, particularly if the breakage occurred near the top or bottom edges; if necessary, carefully detach any remaining glass shards adhering to the plastic components.
Apply warmth to the upper-left portion of the touchscreen using a heat gun or hairdryer.
Carefully pry up the left corner using your fingernails, recognizing that the touch screen plastics are affixed to the screen with adhesive, which may require considerable effort to separate.
Reapply heat with the heat gun if you encounter excessive resistance while raising the touch screen plastic components.
Apply heat again to the right side, replicating the previous process.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Apply heat evenly around the perimeter of the display screen using a heat gun.
Carefully disengage the touch screen plastic from its surrounding frame using a spudger.

Apply heat from the heat gun to each of the lower corners.
Carefully disengage the edges by gently working with your fingernails.
Carefully detach the protective plastic films applied to the touch screen surface.

Step 18

Step 18 image
Carefully remove as much of the old adhesive residue as possible from the front panel frame to ensure proper bonding of the replacement panel.
Proper alignment promotes optimal contact and secure bonding with the fresh adhesive.

Step 19

Step 19 image

Apply adhesive strips specifically designed for this application, or equivalent double-sided tape, to the upper surface of the front panel's plastic components.
Apply firm, even pressure across the adhesive strips on the plastic frame using the flat spudger tip.
Eliminate trapped air and promote proper bonding by performing this step.

Affix the second adhesive strip, or equivalent double-sided tape, to the front panel frame, specifically at the home button’s terminating edge.
Using the flat edge of a spudger, apply pressure across the adhesive strip to secure it and eliminate any trapped air pockets.

Step 21

Step 21 image

Thumbnail 3
  1. Carefully begin separating the adhesive backing from each strip on the front panel plastic using the pointed end of a spudger.
Exercise caution during removal, as the backing is delicate; avoid lifting the adhesive layer itself.

Step 22

Step 22 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3
  1. Remove the adhesive backing from the interior surface of the front panel glass.
Carefully separate the home button assembly, the central glass component, and the layer beneath the ribbon cables; improper separation risks compromised adhesion and a clouded display.
To prevent fingerprint contamination between the display glass layers, handle the interior surface with extreme care.

Step 23

Step 23 image

  1. To allow access to the home button area, carefully direct the front panel's connecting wires downwards.
When joining the front panel sections, ensure the wire identified with the number 2 is positioned in the illustrated orientation.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Thumbnail 2
  1. Position the front glass so its top edge matches the front panel frame, taking care to arrange the upper cables out of the way.

Step 25

Step 25 image

  1. Carefully join the front panel and its frame, verifying that the home button terminations are precisely aligned.

Step 26

Step 26 image
Apply even pressure across the entire perimeter of the phone's top and bottom edges to guarantee the adhesive bonds securely.
