iPhone 3G Glass Replacement

Prior to commencing any repair work, disconnect the device completely from all electrical power.

  • A Phillips-head screwdriver and a soldering iron will be needed for this step.

To prevent electric shock or potential injury, disconnect the power supply and allow the component to cool completely before proceeding with any maintenance or repair procedures. To avoid burns, handle the soldering iron with care, observing all safety precautions during use.

Step 1 | Remove the screws

Begin by performing this straightforward action.
Carefully detach the two screws securing the connector located at the iPhone’s base; use a small, secure container to prevent loss of these fasteners.

The replacement display panel was sourced from distriphone.com.

Step 2 | Remove the glass (delicately)

Step 2 image
Carefully raise the glass panel, marking the connectors for identification. Detach the initial connector individually, then release the second connector with the provided plastic lever tool.
To access the next component, slide the flat sheet-like connector upwards, away from its current position.

Step 3 | Analyze the screws to remove

Two screws are located on one side, while a third screw is positioned at the top of the iPhone.
Removing the warranty-voiding adhesive cover, often referred to as a "snitch," will expose the securing screws on the opposite frame side.

Step 4 | Separate the chassis from the screen

Step 4 image
Carefully separate the LCD's chassis; this initial step requires finesse. Gently spread the assembly a minimal amount using a thin blade, ensuring the blade doesn't contact the LCD panel's surface due to its extreme fragility.

Step 5 | Peel off the window glass

Carefully detach the glass frame, ensuring that any double-sided adhesive tape is also removed using a flat screwdriver. This process, though lengthy, is critical to prevent unwanted separation between the iPhone’s screen and its surrounding silver frame due to excess adhesive.

Step 6 | Replace the glass on the lcd

Step 6 image
To ensure accurate placement, temporarily secure one edge of the glass panel with your hand.
Secure the adhesive tape firmly, maintaining a distance from the defect. Ensure proper connector ply alignment during placement, preventing their entrapment between the glass and its backing; these components must be positioned within the chassis.

Step 7 | Put it all together

Secure the assembly with six fasteners, distributing them evenly with three screws on the left and three on the right.
Reattaching the tablecloth can be challenging due to limited working room; a plastic tool featuring a rubberized tip, designed to maintain grip and prevent slippage on the connector, is recommended to assist with the process.

Step 8

The second connector presented no issues.
Carefully angling the window to its maximum extent, use the plastic tool to assist in the process, ensuring the new iPhone 3G glass remains undamaged.
