iPhone 3G Mute Switch Replacement

This guide details the procedure for substituting the plastic cover on the mute switch; it does not address replacement of the electronic switch component.

Step 2 | Remove the bottom screws

Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the two screws, each measuring 3.7mm, located at the dock-connector end of the iPhone.

For improved handling and safety, detach the metal handle from the suction cup, as gripping the base provides a more secure hold.
Exercise extreme caution during iPhone disassembly to prevent damage to the delicate display cables.
A rubber gasket is located where the silver front bezel meets the black display assembly; separating these components necessitates applying moderate pressure. To ease removal, gently oscillating a suction cup can be beneficial.
Carefully lift the bottom edge of the iPhone's display assembly by applying gentle upward force with a small suction cup positioned close to the Home button.
When the display assembly's surface prevents a secure seal with a suction cup due to damage, employ a robust adhesive tape—like duct tape or packing tape—as an alternative.

Step 4 | Pull up the display

Using one hand to secure the display assembly, employ a spudger with your other hand to carefully detach the display's black ribbon cable, identified as "1."
To prevent damage requiring display replacement, carefully guide the spudger beneath the ribbon cable, accessing it from the left side, referencing the provided image. Attempting to lift the ribbon from the right will likely harm the ribbon connector.

Step 6 | Disconnect cable 2

Carefully detach the ribbon cable identified as "2"—which connects to the capacitive touch panel—using a spudger.

Step 7 | Disconnect cable 3

Certain international (Chinese, European) 3G models lack the flip-up plastic tab; instead, slide the ribbon cable toward the display to detach it. During reassembly, ensure the ribbon cable is pressed firmly to properly seat it within the ribbon socket.
Connector "3" on certain iPhone models exhibits an inverted color scheme, with the plastic tab appearing black and the connector white; ensure correct tab elevation during manipulation to prevent connector damage.
Employ a spudger to lift the 90-degree rotating white plastic tab, which secures ribbon cable "3", thereby disengaging it.
Carefully disconnect the black ribbon cable by sliding it from its connector, then detach the display assembly from the iPhone.

Step 8 | Remove the SIM card tray

Apply downward force to the ejection tool until the SIM card tray releases.

  • Before pressing the ribbon cables into place, carefully verify that their contacts match the corresponding sockets on the motherboard, using magnification if necessary.

Step 12 | Remove the logic board screws

  • Detach the component by unscrewing eight fasteners.

    • The logic board is affixed to the rear case using five screws; each is 2.3 mm in length, features a Phillips #00 head, and has partial threads.

    • The logic board and camera are fastened together using two screws; each is a full-thread Phillips #00 screw, measuring 2.3 mm in diameter.

    • Beneath the "Do not remove" sticker, locate and remove a Phillips #00 screw with a 2.9 mm head.

    When putting everything back together, ensure that the 1/4-20 x 1-inch bolts are tightened to a torque of 18 lb-ft, and that the rubber grommets are properly seated within the mounting brackets to prevent vibration damage.
    Located on the lower right side, near the camera, an orange-highlighted screw secures a metal strip which serves to stabilize the camera's position.
    Before securing the camera with the full-thread 2.3 mm Phillips #00 screw, ensure the strip is correctly positioned.

Step 13 | Loosen the camera

  • Due to a connection with the logic board's base, complete camera removal is currently restricted.

Step 14 | Remove the logic board

  • Carefully lift the logic board's edge nearest the dock connector using a spudger, applying gentle force.

  • Due to its proximity to the 'do not remove' label, the logic board's small, gold-colored grounding tab is fragile and susceptible to damage. Exercise extreme caution to prevent it from catching on the device casing during logic board removal, as breakage occurs readily. Investigate this ground tab for potential damage if signal issues arise following logic board separation.
    Verify that each of the screws holding the logic board in place has been completely unscrewed if it resists upward movement.

Step 15

  • Carefully advance the logic board until it meets the dock connector, then disengage it from the iPhone's chassis.

  • Before securing the logic board within the iPhone enclosure following battery replacement, attach the camera connector to the board. Ensure proper alignment of the logic board's upper portion—specifically, the area containing the SIM tray—prior to fully seating the entire board. Misalignment of the SIM card slot can occur if this step is skipped. After the top section is correctly positioned, the remaining portion of the logic board can be adjusted for proper placement; confirmation of correct installation is indicated by the SIM tray’s alignment with the iPhone case opening and the camera module’s secure seating.

Step 16 | Loosen the battery

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8 socket head cap screws securing the motor assembly to the frame, ensuring a torque of 4 in-lbs is applied to each screw to prevent damage.
Carefully lift the battery away from the back cover using a spudger, as it is secured by an adhesive strip running along its edges.
Employing solely the plastic extraction cord risks battery deformation during removal; avoid this practice.
Disconnecting the battery isn't required to replace the GPS antenna; however, doing so will provide additional clearance when removing the headphone assembly, a step that isn't essential for the antenna replacement itself.
The iPhone battery is secured to the rear enclosure using a low-strength adhesive, which typically remains adhered to the battery during removal. If your new battery has pre-applied adhesive, no further action is needed; otherwise, carefully move the adhesive from the original battery to the replacement.
To release a stuck battery, carefully introduce a small amount of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% between the battery and the device casing. Permit approximately one minute for the alcohol to dissolve the adhesive bond. Then, utilize the spudger’s flat end to delicately pry the battery free, and ensure complete evaporation of the alcohol before proceeding with new battery installation.
To prevent damage, avoid using excessive force when removing the battery; instead, add additional alcohol droplets to dissolve the adhesive if resistance is encountered. Ensure the pry tool does not compromise the battery's structural integrity by puncturing or deforming it.
To facilitate battery separation, apply gentle warmth to the case's rear surface using a hair dryer or heat gun, ensuring the setting is at its lowest level; this softens the adhesive securing the battery.
To prevent potential injury or equipment damage, exercise care.Exposure to excessive heat presents a fire risk to the iPhone's battery.

Step 17 | Mute Switch

Carefully align the 4mm diameter pin on the new actuator with the corresponding hole in the circuit board, ensuring it seats fully before proceeding.
Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the four screws.
Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the three screws, each measuring 1.8 mm, that fasten the headphone jack and GPS antenna assembly to the rear panel.
A plastic loop situated close to the headphone jack secures a 3.8 mm Phillips #00 screw.

Step 18

Carefully align the 4mm diameter dowel pin with the corresponding hole in the chassis and the circuit board, then gently press it into place using pliers, ensuring it is fully seated to secure the components.
Using a Phillips #00 screwdriver, detach the four screws that hold the volume and vibrate buttons in place.
During reassembly, note that the screw located furthest to the right is a longer length than the remaining three screws.

Step 19

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8 screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of no more than 0.5 Nm to prevent damage.
Detach the volume button's electrical components from the iPhone's side, then gently separate the orange ribbon cable from the back panel.
Gently separate the headphone jack from the rear panel's upper edge.

Step 20

Step 21
