iPhone 4 Vibrate Ring Switch Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute the metal cover that protects the vibrate/ring switch; this procedure excludes any work involving the switch's electronic components.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start, ensure the iPhone's battery is depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire and/or explosion hazard if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
The iPhone 4's back cover utilizes either two #000 Phillips screws or Apple's 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws—refer to the second image to identify the screw type present. Confirm you possess the appropriate screwdriver for removal, based on the screw type found.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.
To prevent damage, ensure the Pentalobe driver is fully engaged before turning when removing the screws.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper boundary.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

To release the rear panel, either gently raise it by applying pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.
Before attaching a replacement rear panel, peel away the adhesive backing from the internal lens covering and the protective film located on the adjacent large black surface.

Step 4 | Battery

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the battery connector from the logic board by unscrewing the single 2.5 mm screw that holds it in place.
Certain models incorporate a second screw; this fastener secures the contact pad situated directly above the screw highlighted in red within the accompanying image.

Carefully lift the battery connector away from its connection on the logic board using a plastic opening tool.
To avoid connector damage, release the bracket by applying separating force from the top and bottom surfaces; side access is limited due to a reduced lip.
Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

  1. Carefully extract the battery from the iPhone by utilizing the provided transparent plastic tab to apply gentle upward pressure.
    Should the retaining tab fracture prior to battery separation, introduce a small quantity of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% beneath the battery's edge. Allow approximately one minute for the solvent to degrade the adhesive bond, then gently insert a spudger to disengage the adhesive.
    To prevent damage, avoid prying on any areas other than the intended locations; do not use excessive force when separating the battery. Should the adhesive remain strong, add a small number of additional alcohol drops to soften it. Ensure the pry tool does not create punctures or bends in the battery's structure.
    To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting full evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
    Carefully detach the protective plastic packaging from the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
    Ensure the red-marked contact clip is correctly situated adjacent to the battery connector prior to reattaching the battery connector.
    To prevent potential wireless interference, use a de-greaser like Windex to thoroughly clean all metal surfaces that will make contact during reassembly, as oils from handling can negatively impact wireless performance.
    Following reassembly, execute a factory reset to mitigate potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Logic Board

  1. Employing a SIM card eject tool or a straightened paperclip, release the SIM card and its corresponding tray.
    Applying considerable pressure might be necessary.
    Carefully extract the SIM card from its tray, then detach the tray completely.

  • Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the two screws.
    Use a Phillips head screwdriver, size 1.2 millimeters.
    Use a Phillips screwdriver, size 1.6 mm.
  • Carefully detach the flexible steel cover protecting the dock connector cable inside the iPhone.
    To prevent potential wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils from the metal surfaces where the dock connector cable cover makes contact, using a de-greaser like Windex prior to reassembling.

Step 13

To detach the Wi-Fi antenna from the logic board, use a 2.3 mm Phillips screwdriver to remove one screw, 1.6 mm Phillips screwdrivers for two screws, a 1.4 mm Phillips screwdriver for one screw, and a 4.8 mm Phillips screwdriver for the final screw. During reassembly, initially secure the logic board with the 4.8 mm Phillips screw, followed by the 2.3 mm Phillips screw to prevent incorrect placement that could damage the LCD and digitizer. Ensure the 4.8 mm Phillips screw, which serves as the antenna's ground connection and is frequently responsible for poor Wi-Fi signal strength, is properly installed during reassembly.

Carefully separate the Wi-Fi antenna's top edge from the logic board using an iPod opening tool. Then, with a spudger, detach the Wi-Fi retaining clips from the inner frame. When removing the antenna, be certain to retain the metal clips located atop the cover, along with the 4.8 mm screw that secures them—their loss is a common cause of poor Wi-Fi function following repair. Prior to reassembly, clean all metal contact areas on the connector cover with a de-greaser like Windex to eliminate oils that could interfere with wireless signals; however, avoid applying Windex directly to the connectors.

Gently pry the rear camera connector away from its socket on the logic board, utilizing an iPod opening tool to avoid damage. Then, detach the rear camera.

Carefully peel back the sticker to access and then unscrew the 2.4 mm Phillips screw located beneath it.

Step 17

Carefully lift each of the specified connectors from their corresponding sockets on the logic board, utilizing the edge of a plastic opening tool to avoid damage.
  • Carefully separate the digitizer cable from its housing by applying upward pressure from underneath.
  • Carefully disengage the LCD cable by applying upward pressure from beneath.
  • Carefully detach the cable connecting the headphone jack and volume button, using prying action applied from the upper surface.
  • Carefully detach the microphone and sleep button cable by gently levering it away from the top assembly.
  • Carefully detach the front camera cable by gently levering it upwards from its connector at the top of the device.

Step 18

Using the appropriate tool, detach the 4.8 mm standoff screw located close to the headphone jack.
Employ a standoff screwdriver or bit to extract standoff screws.
If a dedicated tool isn't available, a small flathead screwdriver can be carefully employed; however, exercise heightened awareness to prevent slippage and potential harm to nearby parts.
To ensure proper alignment during reassembly, the Wi-Fi shield, previously removed, requires this standoff to establish its correct height; failure to adequately tighten the standoff will prevent the back cover from sliding into place in step 2 because the shield will protrude from the frame’s surface, and the shield must be level with the headphone jack.
To guarantee proper motherboard installation, position the motherboard's edge so it aligns with the marked standoff; failure to do so will prevent the screws from threading correctly.
Confirm the tiny rubber spacer, positioned atop the motherboard, is correctly installed during reassembly.
Absence of this component risks damage to the surrounding ribbon cables on the motherboard.

Step 19

Detach the iPhone's logic board with caution, ensuring no cables are snagged during the process.
Exercise caution to avoid harming the delicate, gold-colored contact point—identified by a red mark and situated close to the upper edge—due to its vulnerability.
Ensure the lower antenna cable is routed clear of the logic board during reassembly to prevent pinching or damage.

Step 20 | Front Facing Camera

Carefully pry the front camera retainer, a thin steel component, away from the front camera using the edge of a plastic opening tool.
Carefully detach the front camera securing clip.
Align the clip so its tabs face outward, engaging the metal slots.

Step 21

Carefully align the 4mm diameter dowel pins with their corresponding holes in both the upper and lower chassis halves, then gently press the two sections together until flush, ensuring no gaps exist and the pins are fully seated.To remove the front camera, gently detach it from the iPhone, and for easier reattachment of the front camera retainer, consider utilizing tweezers.

Step 22 | Headphone Jack & Volume Control Cable

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8mm screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of no more than 0.5 Nm to prevent damage.Detach the vibrator from the inner frame by unscrewing the two fasteners.
  • A Phillips head screwdriver, size 6 mm, is required.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a single screw with a 1.4 mm head.
Carefully extract the vibrator component from within the inner case.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four M4x8 socket head cap screws securing the lower bearing support to the motor housing, ensuring a torque of 4.5 Nm to prevent damage.Starting with the side closest to the phone's top edge, carefully lift the small black tape using the tip of a plastic opening tool, separating it from the volume button bracket. Afterward, meticulously remove any remaining tape from the ribbon cable area located inside the bottom volume button.

Step 24

Carefully align the 4mm hex key to the setscrew, ensuring it engages fully, and then tighten the setscrew to a torque of 1.5 Nm using the torque wrench.Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the five screws that hold the silent and volume button brackets in place on the outer case; note that the screw positioned beneath the silent switch is a shorter length compared to the others, and the left-side screw for the volume control bracket is longer than the remaining screws.

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds, ensuring that the motor remains securely positioned and avoiding over-tightening which could damage the threads.Gently extract the silent switch and its attached bracket from the outer case's side using tweezers, but leave the switch in place for the time being.

Step 26

Using tweezers, carefully detach the headphone jack assembly from the iPhone, exercising caution to avoid damage to the delicate ribbon cables.

Step 27

Proceed to the next instruction if you are not installing a replacement headphone jack assembly.
Carefully separate the silent switch's electronic component from its metal mounting by gently prying with the tip of a plastic opening tool.
Secure the bracket to the replacement silent switch.
Using the same technique, detach the metal bracket securing the volume buttons from the electronic assembly.
Secure the volume button bracket onto the replacement volume buttons.

Step 28 | Vibrate Ring Switch
