iPhone 4 Wi-Fi Antenna Replacement

To swap out the Wi-Fi antenna, follow these instructions; it's located above the display connectors, positioned near the phone's upper edge.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

To start, ensure the iPhone's battery has depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire and/or explosion hazard if it's accidentally damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
Examine the iPhone 4’s rear cover to identify its screw type: it will either utilize two #000 Phillips screws or Apple’s 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws, as shown in the second image. Confirm you possess the corresponding screwdriver before attempting removal.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.
To prevent damage, ensure the driver is fully engaged with each Pentalobe screw before turning, as these screws are prone to stripping.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing the force upwards towards the top edge.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

To detach the rear panel, either gently raise it by applying pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the back cover.
Before securing the new rear panel, detach the adhesive backing from both the interior surface of the camera lens and the adjacent large black area.

Step 4 | Wi-Fi Antenna

Step 4 image
Using the appropriate screwdriver, detach the five screws that fasten the Wi-Fi antenna to the logic board.
Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 2.3 mm tip.
Use Phillips head screwdrivers with a 1.6 mm tip.
Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 1.4 mm tip.
Use a Phillips screwdriver with a 4.8 mm tip.
To prevent damage and confusion during reassembly, begin by installing the 4.8 mm Philips screw, followed by the 2.3 mm screw; this order helps maintain accuracy and prevents irreparable harm to the LCD and digitizer.
Ensure the lengthy 4.8 mm Philips screw is properly positioned during reassembly, as it serves as the ground connection for the Wi-Fi antenna and is frequently responsible for poor Wi-Fi signal strength following repairs.

Carefully separate the wi-fi antenna from the logic board by gently prying the top edge upward with an iPod opening tool.
Carefully disengage the wi-fi retaining clips from the inner frame by gently prying them with a spudger tip.
To ensure proper Wi-Fi functionality after reassembly, carefully detach the Wi-Fi antenna and retain both the 4.8mm screw and the metal clips located on the cover’s top edge, where the screw is fastened; losing these components is the most common cause of degraded Wi-Fi performance.
To prevent potential wireless interference, thoroughly remove any oils from the metal surfaces where the connector cover makes contact using a de-greaser like Windex; however, avoid applying Windex directly to the connectors.
