iPhone 4 Verizon Cellular Antenna Replacement

This guide details the procedure for substituting the cellular antenna, a component typically affixed to the speaker enclosure.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Step 1 image
To start, ensure the iPhone's battery is depleted to a level below 25%; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire or explosion hazard if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
Examine the back casing; it's secured with either two #000 Phillips screws or Apple's proprietary 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws. Verify the screw type present and confirm you possess the matching screwdriver for successful removal.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper rim.
Expect the panel to shift approximately 2 millimeters.

Step 3

Step 3 image
To detach the rear panel, either gently raise it by applying upward pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.

Step 4 | Battery

Step 4 image
If a 1.5 mm Phillips screw is used to attach the battery connector to the logic board, detach it.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Carefully lift the battery connector away from its connection on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool.
Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

Step 6

To release the battery from its adhesive backing, grasp the visible, transparent plastic tab and lift upwards.
Should the battery's retaining tab fracture prior to separation, introduce a small quantity of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% beneath the fractured tab's edge. Allow approximately one minute for the alcohol to dissolve the adhesive bond. Subsequently, gently insert a spudger beneath the battery tab to disengage the adhesive.
To avoid damage, do not attempt to force the battery free using leverage elsewhere. If the adhesive remains strong, add additional drops of alcohol to soften it. Ensure the pry tool does not puncture or bend the battery during removal.
To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting full evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
Disconnect the power source by detaching the battery.
Carefully detach the protective plastic packaging from the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
To prevent potential wireless interference, thoroughly remove any residue from metal surfaces that will contact each other during reassembly, using a cleaner like Windex.
Following reassembly, execute a full system reset to mitigate potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Speaker Enclosure Assembly

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the cover that protects the dock connector cable by unscrewing the two fasteners held in place with 1.8 mm screws.
Carefully detach the metal cover protecting the dock connector cable.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Carefully lift the dock cable connector from its corresponding socket on the logic board, employing the flat edge of a plastic opening tool.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Carefully detach the dock connector cable from both the adhesive holding it to the logic board and the adhesive securing it to the speaker enclosure's side.

Step 10

Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the pressure contact from the logic board, taking care to unscrew the 1.6 mm fastener located close to the vibrator.
Disconnect the pressure contact.
To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly clean the pressure contact with a degreaser like Windex or isopropyl alcohol before reinstallation; residue from handling can disrupt wireless signals.

Step 11

  1. Carefully separate the Wi-Fi antenna cable from its connection on the logic board using the tip of a plastic opening tool.
  2. Carefully maneuver the Wi-Fi antenna cable, freeing it from the metal finger retainers secured to the logic board.

Step 12

Step 12 image
  • Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the speaker enclosure assembly from the outer case by unscrewing the two fasteners, each measuring 2.4 mm.

Step 13

Step 13 image
  • Carefully extract the tiny, black-colored spacer located beneath the Phillips screw positioned close to the vibrator.

  1. Carefully pry the speaker enclosure assembly free from the device housing with a plastic tool, exercising caution to avoid bending or breaking the Wi-Fi antenna’s electromagnetic interference (EMI) fingers.
  2. Detach the speaker enclosure, a complete unit, from the device.
  3. Ensure the Wi-Fi grounding fingers are positioned beneath the lip of the iPhone’s metal case, referencing the third image for proper placement, prior to tightening the screws securing the speaker enclosure assembly.
  4. To prevent wireless interference, thoroughly clean all metal surfaces where the Wi-Fi antenna grounding fingers meet the iPhone case using a de-greaser like Windex or isopropyl alcohol prior to reassembling the device.

Step 15 | Cellular Antenna

Step 15 image
  • Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the cellular antenna from the speaker enclosure by unscrewing the two fasteners held in place with 1.6 mm screws.

  1. Carefully begin separating the antenna from the speaker housing by gently working a plastic opening tool between the antenna and the enclosure, starting close to where the cellular antenna cable connects.
Carefully detach the cellular antenna from the speaker enclosure, avoiding damage to the gold bracket secured to its edge.
Disconnect and detach the cellular antenna.
