iPhone 4 Verizon Volume Buttons Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute the existing metal volume buttons.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Step 1 image
To start, ensure the iPhone's battery is depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery presents a fire and/or explosion hazard if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage to components, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
To detach the back casing, examine it to determine if it secures with two #000 Phillips screws or Apple's proprietary 5-Point "Pentalobe" screws; use the corresponding screwdriver to successfully remove the fasteners.
Using either a Pentalobe or Phillips #000 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper boundary.
Expect approximately 2 millimeters of movement in the panel.

Step 3

Step 3 image
To detach the rear panel, either gently raise it by applying upward pressure with your fingers or secure a Small Suction Cup to the panel and lift.
Exercise caution to prevent harm to the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.

Step 4 | Battery

Step 4 image
If a 1.5 mm Phillips screw is found fastening the battery connector to the logic board, detach it.

Step 5

Step 5 image
Carefully lift the battery connector away from its connection on the logic board, utilizing the side of a plastic opening tool to avoid damage.
Exercise extreme caution when releasing the battery connector, ensuring you apply force only to the connector itself, as applying pressure to the logic board socket risks irreparable damage.
Carefully detach the metal clip, which secures the antenna connector.

Step 6

Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the three retaining screws on the motor assembly to a torque of 3.5 inch-pounds; be sure to avoid over-tightening, as this could damage the threads.
To release the battery from its adhesive backing, grasp the visible, transparent plastic tab and lift upwards.
Should the retaining tab fracture prior to battery separation, introduce a small amount of isopropyl alcohol with a concentration exceeding 90% between the battery and its housing. Allow approximately one minute for the adhesive to soften due to the alcohol's action, then gently use a spudger to disengage the adhesive and free the battery.
To avoid damage, do not attempt to force the battery free using leverage elsewhere. If the adhesive remains strong, add additional drops of alcohol to soften it. Ensure the pry tool does not puncture or warp the battery's structure.
To prevent damage, ensure any residual alcohol solution is completely removed by wiping with a clean cloth or permitting full evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.
Disconnect the power source by extracting the battery.
Carefully detach the protective plastic packaging from the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
To prevent potential wireless interference, thoroughly remove any residue from metal surfaces that will touch each other during reassembly, using a cleaning agent like Windex.
Following reassembly, execute a complete system reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 7 | Volume Buttons

Step 7 image
Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four mounting screws securing the fan assembly to the motor housing, ensuring each is snug but not over-torqued to prevent damage; observe polarity markings when reattaching the wiring harness.
Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the volume button bracket from the outer case by unscrewing the three fasteners, each measuring 1.6 mm.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Using a 5/32-inch hex key, carefully tighten the four screws securing the motor assembly to the chassis, ensuring each is snug but not overtightened to avoid damaging the threads; observe polarity markings during reinstallation and be mindful of the flexible cable routing to prevent pinching or stress.
Gently move the volume bracket outward, creating a small gap between it and the outer case.
Carefully extract the volume buttons from the iPhone using tweezers.
