iPhone 4S Volume Buttons Replacement

Follow these instructions to substitute the existing metal volume buttons.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Step 1 image
To start, ensure the iPhone's battery has depleted to less than 25% capacity; a fully charged lithium-ion battery poses a fire or explosion risk if damaged.
To prevent electrical shock or damage, ensure the iPhone is completely de-energized prior to starting the repair process.
Using a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver, detach the two screws measuring 3.6 mm located adjacent to the dock connector.
To prevent damage, ensure the driver is fully engaged with each Pentalobe screw before turning, as these screws are prone to stripping.

Step 2

Apply pressure to the back cover, directing it upwards against the device's upper rim.
Expect a displacement of approximately 2 millimeters.

Step 3

Step 3 image
Carefully separate the rear panel from the iPhone's back casing, taking precautions to avoid breakage of the plastic clips affixed to the rear panel.
Carefully detach the iPhone's back cover.

Step 4 | Battery

Using appropriate tools, detach the battery connector from the logic board by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.
Utilize a PH00 Phillips screwdriver to loosen and remove a 1.7-millimeter screw.
Use a PH00 Phillips screwdriver to loosen and remove a 1.5 mm screw.

Carefully disconnect the battery connector from its receptacle on the logic board, utilizing a plastic opening tool to avoid damage.
Using the tool, gently insert the tip into the gap separating the loudspeaker enclosure from the connector's metal cover, then raise the connector’s lower edge.
To detach the battery connector, move it straight up away from the logic board; avoid any lateral pressure.
Avoid applying force directly to the battery connector's socket, as this could dislodge it from the logic board due to the presence of four delicate solder joints.

Step 7 | Reassembly tip

Ensure the pressure contact is correctly situated during reassembly, resting atop the designated Philips screw post and orienting the gold contact so it faces the battery connector.
To prevent wireless interference caused by oils from handling, thoroughly clean the pressure contact using a degreaser like Windex or isopropyl alcohol.

Step 8

Using a plastic opening tool, gently slide the tip into the gap separating the battery from the phone's exterior casing, positioning the tool close to the bottom edge.
Using the plastic opening tool, carefully work your way along the battery's right side, lifting the battery slightly at multiple locations to release the adhesive holding it in place within the outer case, ensuring complete separation.
To loosen a stubborn battery adhesive, carefully introduce a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, with a concentration exceeding 90%, along the battery's perimeter.
Allow approximately sixty seconds for the isopropyl alcohol to reduce the bond strength of the adhesive.
Carefully raise the battery using the flat, plastic tip of a specialized opening tool.
To prevent damage, avoid using excessive force when removing the battery; if the adhesive resists, add a small amount of alcohol to loosen it. Ensure the pry tool does not damage or penetrate the battery's casing during the separation process.
To prevent damage, ensure all traces of the alcohol solution are removed by wiping with a clean cloth or by permitting complete evaporation before proceeding with the new battery installation.

Step 9

Gently lift the battery away from its adhesive backing by grasping the visible, transparent plastic tab.
Exercise caution when grasping the plastic pull tab, as excessive force may cause it to tear.
Disconnect the power source by detaching the battery.
Carefully detach the protective plastic covering from the new battery by gently separating it from the ribbon cable.
Before installing the new battery, ensure the included cable is formed into its correct contour.
To confirm correct positioning during the new battery installation, briefly attach the battery connector to the device; after securing the battery with adhesive, detach the connector.
Following reassembly, execute a factory reset to proactively avoid potential problems and streamline any subsequent diagnostic procedures.

Step 10 | Volume Buttons

Step 10 image
Using a Phillips screwdriver, detach the volume button bracket from the outer case by unscrewing the three fasteners, each measuring 1.5 mm.

Step 11

Step 11 image
Carefully tighten the four M4 x 8mm screws securing the fan assembly to the heatsink, ensuring a torque of 4.5 Nm is applied with a torque screwdriver.
Gently move the volume bracket outward, creating a small gap between it and the outer case.
Carefully extract the volume buttons from the iPhone using tweezers.
